LOHF Shelf Edition: Alex

Several days ago, Gabino Iglesias posted an interview with author Shannon Kirk for Show Me Your Shelves  in which she shares photos of her bookshelves and answers questions from Gabino. We loved the idea and were inspired to create Ladies of Horror Fiction: Shelf Edition. Once a month we’ll interview someone about their ladies of horror fiction books and share some shelfies! First up is Ladies of Horror fiction team member Alex, who kindly agreed to be the guinea pig for this segment.

Do you have any recent favorite LOHF books?

My most recent LOHF works have been mostly in short story collections and novellas, but I have become obsessed with Kristi DeMeester and Christa Carmen lately. DeMeester’s chapbook Unmemory was the perfect dark nightcap for a holiday season, and Christa Carmen’s collection Something Borrowed, Something Blood-Soaked is unputdownable (yes, that’s a word!)

What LOHF books do you have on your TBR?

KISTE. I NEED ALL OF GWENDOLYN KISTE! I have heard nothing but brilliant reviews on her books such as The Rust Maidens, And Her Smile Will Untether the Universe, and Pretty Marys All in a Row. She is high on my list of anticipated TBR authors.

Where do you find recommendations? Are there any LOHF books that have been recommended to you that you loved?

I usually find recommendations by browsing Goodreads and Twitter. Both are an endless rabbit hole that will lead to loads of recommendations! Ania Ahlborn’s Seed was recommended to me by a friend last year and I loved it. And now I love her. I own all her books except for one. I still have a few of her bibliography to read but I am enjoying my time with her words and books so much. Beverley Lee’s Gabriel Davenport series also came to me highly recommended from a friend and it did not disappoint either. Her prose just flows off the pages like liquid gold. I would read anything she writes, and that includes old grocery lists. Yep. She’s that good!

Where do you shop for books?

Amazon, mostly, and I do hate that because I realize it may not be the best for the author/publisher. I need to be better and educate myself on how to best contribute to the people who make these books possible instead of the e-commerce goliath that Amazon has become. I also use ThriftBooks, BookDepository, and BookOutlet for online shopping. I go to my local Half Price Books and Posman Books when I want to browse physical books in person. I am also 1 mile away from a library each way you turn out of my driveway. One library hosts a book sale once a month and the other has two book sales a month. I always walk away with a couple tote bags full!

Are there any upcoming LOHF releases you’re excited about?

I am excited about reading The Haunting of Henderson Close by Catherine Cavendish being published by Flame Tree Press. It releases 1/10/19! I am also looking forward to The Toll by Cherie Priest being published by Tor Books. I believe it is expected to release sometime in Summer 2019. And another book I am looking forward to is When I Arrived At The Castle by Emily Carroll being published by Koyama Press. It should also be another summer 2019 release. Summer is looking good so far!
