Young Adult Books Reviewed

This month Cassie reviewed Our Last Echoes by Kate Alice Marshall. Don’t miss her 5⭐ review of Our Last Echoes (“First and foremost, I absolutely freaking LOVED this book & I am 100% going to buy and read everything else Kate Alice Marshall writes.“)

Cassie also read and reviewed White Smoke by Tiffany D. Jackson. Be sure to check out her review of White Smoke (“Overall, I’d recommend this for horror fans – especially YA horror fans – but with the caveat that it doesn’t wrap up with any solid ending, so if that bothers you, don’t be caught unaware!”)

What We've Been Reading #114

We hope you’re all finding some time to relax and read a book or two. Our devoted team members are back to bring you three new reading recommendations!

Click the tags above to read our previous review round-ups.

Yours Cruelly, Elvira by Cassandra Peterson

The woman behind the icon known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, the undisputed Queen of Halloween, reveals her full story, filled with intimate bombshells, told by the bombshell herself.

On Good Friday in 1953, at only 18 months old, 25 miles from the nearest hospital in Manhattan, Kansas, Cassandra Peterson reached for a pot on the stove and doused herself in boiling water. Third-degree burns covered 35% of her body, and the prognosis wasn’t good. But she survived. Burned and scarred, the impact stayed with her and became an obstacle she was determined to overcome. Feeling like a misfit led to her love of horror. While her sisters played with Barbie dolls, Cassandra built model kits of Frankenstein and Dracula, and idolized Vincent Price.

Due to a complicated relationship with her mother, Cassandra left home at 14, and by age 17 she was performing at the famed Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas. Run-ins with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Tom Jones helped her grow up fast. Then a chance encounter with her idol Elvis Presley, changed the course of her life forever, and led her to Europe where she worked in film and traveled Italy as lead singer of an Italian pop band. She eventually made her way to Los Angeles, where she joined the famed comedy improv group, The Groundlings, and worked alongside Phil Hartman and Paul “Pee-wee” Reubens, honing her comedic skills.

Nearing age 30, a struggling actress considered past her prime, she auditioned at local LA channel KHJ as hostess for the late night vintage horror movies. Cassandra improvised, made the role her own, and got the job on the spot. Yours Cruelly, Elvira is an unforgettably wild memoir. Cassandra doesn’t shy away from revealing exactly who she is and how she overcame seemingly insurmountable odds. Always original and sometimes outrageous, her story is loaded with twists, travails, revelry, and downright shocking experiences. It is the candid, often funny, and sometimes heart-breaking tale of a Midwest farm girl’s long strange trip to become the world’s sexiest, sassiest Halloween icon.

Alex’s Teaser Review

Highly recommended whether you are familiar with her or not – her life story and teachings will change your life and the way you view yourself, women, the Hollywood industry, and it will make you wish all your favorite entertainers would step up to the plate and put out a memoir of their own! I love this book with every fiber of my being.

Flyaway by Kathleen Jennings

In a small Western Queensland town, a reserved young woman receives a note from one of her vanished brothers—a note that makes question her memories of their disappearance and her father’s departure.

A beguiling story that proves that gothic delights and uncanny family horror can live—and even thrive—under a burning sun, Flyaway introduces readers to Bettina Scott, whose search for the truth throws her into tales of eerie dogs, vanished schools, cursed monsters, and enchanted bottles. Flyaway enchants you with the sly, beautiful darkness of Karen Russell and a world utterly its own.

Audra’s Teaser Review

A surreal blend of mystery and folklore, this lyrical novella is as tangled as the lantern-bush vines that creep and consume the town at the center of the story.

Salt Blood by T.C. Parker

SaltBlood by T.C. Parker

Robin didn’t mean to break the law. Didn’t know at first what law she’d broken. And now she’s on her way to Salt Rock – a new-model prison for a new kind of criminal, way out in the remote Northern Isles of Scotland. On Salt Rock, she’ll meet other prisoners like her – men and women from all over the world, spirited away from the lives they knew for crimes they didn’t know they were committing.

She’ll uncover the complex web of conspiracy that connects them all, confronting some of the darkness of her own past in the process. And she’ll come face to face, finally, with an evil as old as the land itself.

It’s hell in those waters.

What We've Been Reading #113

Today several of our team members are sharing their recent and recommended reads. We hope you find something you’ll love!

Don’t forget to click either tag above to find more books worth your time ♥

The Gold Persimmon by Linsday Merbaum

Clytemnestra is a check-in girl at The Gold Persimmon, a temple-like New York City hotel with gilded furnishings and carefully guarded secrets. Cloistered in her own reality, Cly lives by a strict set of rules until a connection with a troubled hotel guest threatens the world she’s so carefully constructed.

In a parallel reality, an inexplicable fog envelops the city, trapping a young, nonbinary writer named Jaime in a sex hotel with six other people. As the survivors begin to turn on one another, Jaime must navigate a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Haunted by specters of grief and familial shame, Jaime and Cly find themselves trapped in dual narratives in this gripping experimental novel that explores sexuality, surveillance, and the very nature of storytelling.

Alex’s Teaser Review

THE GOLD PERSIMMON by Lindsay Merbaum is full of suspense supported by tight writing, quick pacing, and interesting characters.

Let’s Play White by Chesya Burke

White brings with it dreams of respect, of wealth, of simply being treated as a human being. It’s the one thing Walter will never be. But what if he could play white, the way so many others seem to do? Would it bring him privilege or simply deny the pain? The title story in this collection asks those questions, and then moves on to challenge notions of race, privilege, personal choice, and even life and death with equal vigor. From the spectrum spanning despair and hope in “What She Saw When They Flew Away” to the stark weave of personal struggles in “Chocolate Park,” Let’s Play White speaks with the voices of the overlooked and unheard. “I Make People Do Bad Things” shines a metaphysical light on Harlem’s most notorious historical madame, and then, with a deft twist into melancholic humor, “Cue: Change” brings a zombie-esque apocalypse, possibly for the betterment of all mankind.

Goodreads | Amazon | Bookshop

Audra’s Teaser Review

The stories offer urban realism as characters grapple with decisions and make choices that are often forced upon them. The stories are often claustrophobic, but it’s a good uncomfortable, the type that makes you see through someone else’s eyes, analyzing your own perspective and assumptions about race, class, gender, and the human condition.

What We've Been Reading #112

Welcome to our latest review round-up! We hope you find a new favorite. Please click either tag above to read our previous recommendations.

How to Recognize A Demon Has Become Your Friend by Linda Addison

Who doesn’t need to know How To Recognize A Demon Has Become Your Friend? From the first African-American to receive the HWA Bram Stoker award, this collection of both horror and science fiction short stories and poetry reveals demons in the most likely people (like a jealous ghost across the street) or in unlikely places (like the dimension-shifting dreams of an American Indian). Recognition is the first step, what you do with your friends/demons after that is up to you.

Goodreads | Amazon | Bookshop

Audra’s Teaser Review

What I loved best about these stories is that though they all contain dark themes, Addison brings a different dimension to each story. Some are hilarious and some are heartbreaking. Some delve into the supernatural and others offer more realistic horror. This collection definitely held my interest just because I had no idea what was coming next!

Dead Eyes by EV Knight

On June 4, 1966, “Dead-Eye” Dave Darrow murdered and mutilated a group of teenagers at his family’s home. His sister’s disappearance, his subsequent escape from the asylum, and a slew of deaths and missing persons surrounding the home have given birth to some wild local theories.

Twenty years later, Lisa Thompson needs to finish her exposé on the infamous Darrow story to ensure her full ride scholarship to U.C. Berkley’s School of Journalism. But the problem is, she doesn’t have a killer ending.

The girl moving in to the Darrow’s old place could be Lisa’s lucky break. But new blood in thehouse and Lisa’s research awaken something or someone evil and murders begin anew in spectacular fashion.

Will Lisa uncover the truth within the Darrow house, or will she and her friends die trying?

Book 18 in the Rewind-or-Die series: imagine your local movie rental store back in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, remember all those fantastic covers. Remember taking those movies home and watching in awe as the stories unfolded in nasty rainbows of gore, remember the atmosphere and textures. Remember the blood.

Goodreads | Amazon | Bookshop

Laurie’s Teaser Review

Dead Eyes is a gory, fun read in the Rewind or Die series. I would love to see these 80’s themed novellas turned into films. There is such cheesy goodness to behold. But for now, we have these great books that don’t take things too seriously and that is perfectly fine by me.

We Are Wolves

We Are Wolves edited by Gemma Amor, Laurel Hightower & Cynthia Pelayo

Once upon a time, there was a woman, and she was tired. Tired of pushing. Tired of being pushed. Tired of feeling alone. Tired of so much.

So she gathered together a pack of wolves, a band of mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, partners, friends, lovers, survivors, victors and brilliant, shining things, and she told them to sing.

And sing they did.

The result is We Are Wolves, a chorus of of terrifying, moving and heart-breaking stories from some of horror’s finest contemporary writers including Gemma Amor, Laurel Hightower, Cina Pelayo, Sarah Read, Hailey Piper, V Castro, Sara Tantlinger, Sonora Taylor and many more.

All proceeds from the sale of this charity anthology will go towards helping the survivors of abuse and assault.

Angie’s Teaser Review

I love anything that promises me nothing but women writing horror. Especially when that thing also happens to be a charity anthology. We Are Wolves checks both of those boxes.

What We've Been Reading #111

Today we have another round-up of recommended reads and linkage to our full reviews. Check out the previous editions by hitting the tags up above!

Sed de Sangre by V. Castro

Sed de Sangre by V. Castro

Three short erotic horror stories about bloodlust: Carnival of Gore will fly you down to Rio where the vampires have congregated for their annual feast. The Four Horsemen Inn is a sad tale of sex during the apocalypse. Snake Hips is by far the hottest of them all. Do you dare enter The Pink Agave Motel?

Goodreads | Amazon

Audra’s Teaser Review

V. Castro mingles blood, passion, and mythology in these stories and all three offered captivating worlds and characters that I’d love to see more of.

The Ancestor by Danielle Trussone

The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni

From the New York Times, USA Today, and internationally bestselling author of the Angelology series comes a bewitching gothic novel of suspense that plunges readers into a world of dark family secrets, the mysteries of human genetics, and the burden of family inheritance.

It feels like a fairy tale when Alberta ”Bert” Monte receives a letter addressed to “Countess Alberta Montebianco” at her Hudson Valley, New York, home that claims she’s inherited a noble title, money, and a castle in Italy. While Bert is more than a little skeptical, the mystery of her aristocratic family’s past, and the chance to escape her stressful life for a luxury holiday in Italy, is too good to pass up.

At first, her inheritance seems like a dream come true: a champagne-drenched trip on a private jet to Turin, Italy; lawyers with lists of artwork and jewels bequeathed to Bert; a helicopter ride to an ancestral castle nestled in the Italian Alps below Mont Blanc; a portrait gallery of ancestors Bert never knew existed; and a cellar of expensive vintage wine for Bert to drink.

But her ancestry has a dark side, and Bert soon learns that her family history is particularly complicated. As Bert begins to unravel the Montebianco secrets, she begins to realize her true inheritance lies not in a legacy of ancestral treasures, but in her very genes.

Goodreads | Amazon | Bookshop

Laurie’s Teaser Review

The Ancestor is a book about family secrets, ooh my favorite, and it takes some wild and unexpected turns. Just when you think it’s going to be one thing (a straight-up gothic tale perhaps?) it turns out to be something else entirely and I LOVED that. I enjoyed this trip into the strange and unexpected and I love that it bravely went the last place I would’ve expected it to go!

A Conjuring for All Seasons: An Anthology of Witch Lore featuring Hailey Piper, Stephanie M. Wytovich, K. P. Kulski, Donyae Coles, and Gaby Triana

A Conjuring for All Seasons contains five dark novelettes from five practicing witches. Four seasonally themed tales based around important Wiccan celebrations join a Hoodoo story concerning the dead around All Hallows’.

Magic Loves the Hungry by Hailey Piper

A presence haunts Melody Langston. It grows bolder each night, as if preying on her anxiety-ridden complications with coven initiation, friends who are her ex-lovers, and the touch of overattentive authority. Starved for belonging, she needs to prove herself, cleanse herself, prove she isn’t weak.

But a terrifying enigma has its heart set on her, and magic loves the hungry.

Drawing Down the Sun by Stephanie M. Wytovich

Protection is vital.

Faye Erikson has been dead for centuries, but her grip on the Clement family remains as strong now as it did the day she spat out her curse. Fearful of her wrath, the family heads out to the woods around Midsummer each year to stand watch over her grave. Anne Clement, the first girl to be born into their bloodline in over 200 years, has some reservations about Faye and her ties to her family. Her curiosity leads her to dig deeper into her ancestral history, and what she uncovers might be scarier than the witch she’s been taught to fear.

Milk Kin by K.P. Kulski

She knows because she remembers the night her mother disappeared. It doesn’t matter she had been a newborn, that Grandmother Bada and auntie say it is impossible to remember so early. Ruby did and she could replay the memory like a video— of how the long-fingered woman took her mother away. How the same woman returns every autumn decorated with teeth and oak leaves, with a long silver needle that pierces Ruby’s heel.

The House of the Heart by Donyae Coles

“The House of the Heart is about family and the ways that we carry that and how it carries us. It’s a story about boundaries and reparations. It’s also about knowing when it’s time to just grab a candle and let the ancestors handle it. Though it is never mentioned by name in the story, the practice is hoodoo and I wanted to write something where even though the outcomes were sensational, it was still a living practice that was part of their lives, as natural as breathing.” – Donyae Coles

Longest Night by Gaby Triana

Two modern-day witches, recently out of the broom closet, throw a Yuletide party to welcome the winter solstice with friends, unprepared for the uninvited guests who arrive. When Christmas-themed pranks appearing after the party unexpectedly ends turn deadly, Indigo must figure out where they’re coming from, who’s causing them, and whether or not she’s witch enough to end them during the longest night of her life.

One dark December night, in a small seaside town, a little girl is found abandoned. When her mother finally arrives, authorities release the pair, believing it to be an innocent case of a toddler running off.

The Sentence by Louise Erdrich

In this stunning and timely novel, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich creates a wickedly funny ghost story, a tale of passion, of a complex marriage, and of a woman’s relentless errors.

Louise Erdrich’s latest novel, The Sentence, asks what we owe to the living, the dead, to the reader and to the book. A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store’s most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls’ Day, but she simply won’t leave the store. Tookie, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading with murderous attention, must solve the mystery of this haunting while at the same time trying to understand all that occurs in Minneapolis during a year of grief, astonishment, isolation, and furious reckoning.

The Sentence begins on All Souls’ Day 2019 and ends on All Souls’ Day 2020. Its mystery and proliferating ghost stories during this one year propel a narrative as rich, emotional, and profound as anything Louise Erdrich has written.

Shadow Atlas: Dark Landscapes of the Americas edited by Carina Bissett, Hillary Dodge, and Joshua Viola

Ancient peoples knew there were lands given over to shadow and spirit. The world is full of haunted places that exact a terrible toll on trespassers. Our forebears paid a heavy price to earn the wisdom and the warning they bequeathed to future generations.

Time transformed their precious knowledge into superstition, but there are those whose hearts beat in rhythm with the past and whose vision is not clouded by modernity. Seeking to reclaim humanity’s early secrets, the Umbra Arca Society was forged. For centuries, this private league of explorers dedicated their lives to uncovering the oldest mysteries of the Americas. Armed with boldness and guile, and equipped with only a compass, a journal, and devotion to truth, these adventurers braved cursed landscapes, dared unnatural adversaries, and exposed hidden civilizations.

Many did not survive.

None were forgotten.

Their stories are maps revealing the topography and contours of landscapes unimaginable and dark. The Shadow Atlas collects their adventures.

Edited by authors and folklore enthusiasts Carina Bissett and Hillary Dodge, and four-time Colorado Book Award finalist, Joshua Viola.
