The "Moon" Recap

It’s hard not to think of werewolf stories when we think of the MOON in horror, right? While there were quite a few chosen for the prompt, we definitely got a lot of variety!  What do you think about the ones below?

(By the way, if you missed our HOUSE recap, you can find it here.)

We’re kicking off the MOON prompt with a photo and recommendation from our very own toni_the_reader.  Through the Woods by Emily Carroll is a collection of nighttime stories.

“Five mysterious, spine-tingling stories follow journeys into (and out of?) the eerie abyss.

These chilling tales spring from the macabre imagination of acclaimed and award-winning comic creator Emily Carroll.

Come take a walk in the woods and see what awaits you there…”

Drunk_on_books shared Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris, who may me best known for her Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood book series.  Midnight Crossroad is the first book in another series for Harris known as Midnight, Texas and is full of all kinds of supernatural characters as well!

“Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawnshop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth…”

How aesthetically stunning is this cover that gowsy33 chose?!  I can’t stand how much I love the colors and whimsical design.  Pretty Marys All In A Row by Gwendolyn Kiste has been described by our own Scifiandscary as “a dark fantasy novella with roots in horror.”  We are seeing more and more of Kiste popping up and WE ARE NOT COMPLAINING!

“You’ll find her on a lonely highway, hitchhiking at midnight. She calls herself Rhee, but everyone else knows her by another name: Resurrection Mary. And when she’s transported home each night to a decrepit mansion on a lane to nowhere, she’s not alone.

In the antique mirror, call her name three times, and Bloody Mary will appear. Outside, wandering through a garden of poisonous flowers is Mistress Mary, Quite Contrary, a nursery rhyme come to gruesome life. Downstairs is another jump-rope rhyme—Mary Mack, forever conscripted to build her own coffin. And brooding in the corner with her horse skull is the restless Mari Lwyd.

They are the Marys, the embodiment of urban legend and what goes bump in the night. Every evening, they gather around the table and share nightmares like fine wine, savoring the flavors of those they’ve terrified.

But other than these brief moments together, the Marys are alone, haunting a solitary gloom that knows them better than they know themselves. That’s because they don’t remember who they were before—or even if there was a before. And worst of all, they don’t know how to escape this fate.

That is, until a moment of rage inspires Rhee to leap from the highway—and into the mirror with Bloody Mary. Suddenly, the Marys are learning how to move between their worlds, all while realizing how much stronger they are together.

But just when freedom is within their reach, something in the gloom fights back—something that isn’t ready to let them go. Now with her sisters in danger of slipping into the darkness, Rhee must unravel the mystery of who the Marys were before they were every child’s nightmare. And she’ll have to do it before what’s in the shadows comes to claim her for its own.”

Spoilerssweetieno11 opened up a copy of The Widow’s House by Carol Goodman to show us.  Goodman is the award-winning author of The Lake of Dead Languages and has been described as blending the styles of Daphne du Maurier and Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Go find out!

When Jess and Clare Martin move from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to their former college town in the Hudson River valley, they are hoping for rejuvenation—of their marriage, their savings, and Jess’s writing career.

They take a caretaker’s job at Riven House, a crumbling estate and the home of their old college writing professor. While Clare once had dreams of being a writer, those plans fell by the wayside when Jess made a big, splashy literary debut in their twenties. It’s been years, now, since his first novel. The advance has long been spent. Clare’s hope is that the pastoral beauty and nostalgia of the Hudson Valley will offer some inspiration.

But their new life isn’t all quaint town libraries and fragrant apple orchards. There is a haunting pall that hangs over Riven House like a funeral veil. Something is just not right. Soon, Clare begins to hear babies crying at night, and sees strange figures in fog at the edge of their property. Diving into the history of the area, she realizes that Riven House has a dark and anguished past. And whatever this thing is—this menacing force that destroys the inhabitants of the estate—it seems to be after Clare next…”

Our final selection for today’s recap of MOON is Chosen by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast.  Tamsparks shared with us this book and reminded our own findingmontauk just how much he loves the House of Night series!  It’s almost like Harry Potter meets vampires and more (or so he says, anyway!)  Chosen is the third book in the series that contains 12+ books and novellas.

“Dark forces are at work at the House of Night and Zoey Redbird’s adventures at the school take a mysterious turn. Her best friend, Stevie Rae, is undead and struggling to maintain a grip on her humanity. Zoey finds herself in the very unexpected and rare situation of having three boyfriends. Mix a little bloodlust into the equation and the situation has the potential to spell social disaster. Just when it seems things couldn’t get any tougher, vampyres start turning up dead. Really dead. It looks like the People of Faith are tired of living side-by-side with vampyres. But, as Zoey and her friends so often find out, how things appear rarely affects the truth…”

So we did NOT saturate you with werewolves today in the recap, but if you love werewolves, we promise there were plenty shared so go back and check the #ladiesofhorrorfiction hashtag and you’ll come across them through scrolling eventually! πŸ˜‰

Come back next week as we share highlights from ANTICIPATED reads as that was a great prompt to showcase some upcoming horror to satiate our dark hearts.
