The "Weather" Recap

It seems the weather has been acting crazy everywhere for the past couple of months.  It’s been snowing more than normal.  It’s been drowning people with loads of rain.  It’s been scorching hot and unbearable to walk outside.  You name it, Mother Nature has been doing it.  But let’s check out some of our favorite LOHF books that encompass something weather-related!

In case you missed it, don’t forget to see our recap last week where we show some highlights from the “VILLAIN” prompt!

First up, we have The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon that missbonnie13 shared with us.  This photo just looks like it belongs atop an icy snow drift!

“West Hall, Vermont, has always been a town of strange disappearances and old legends. The most mysterious is that of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead in the field behind her house just months after the tragic death of her daughter.

Now, in present day, nineteen-year-old Ruthie lives in Sara’s farmhouse with her mother, Alice, and her younger sister. Alice has always insisted that they live off the grid, a decision that has weighty consequences when Ruthie wakes up one morning to find that Alice has vanished. In her search for clues, she is startled to find a copy of Sara Harrison Shea’s diary hidden beneath the floorboards of her mother’s bedroom. As Ruthie gets sucked into the historical mystery, she discovers that she’s not the only person looking for someone that they’ve lost. But she may be the only one who can stop history from repeating itself.”

Grumplstiltskin is serving up some weather realness with three different books!  Here you can see the short story “When Thunder Walks” by Conda V. Douglas from the collection Women of Darkness.  You can also see Everything That’s Underneath by Kristie DeMeester and Deeply Twisted by Chantal Noordeloos.

Women of Darkness
“Twenty original stories from the best of today’s women horror and dark fantasy writers cover every topic of terror. From voodoo and Navajo magic to cannibal cats and scary babies, these tales are perfect for Halloween.”

Everything That’s Underneath
“Everything That’s Underneath, Kristi DeMeester’s debut powerful horror collection, is full of weird, unsettling tales that recalls the styles of such accomplished storytellers as Laird Barron and Tom Piccirilli.

Crawl across the earth and dig in the dirt. Feel it. Tearing at your nails, gritty between your teeth, filling your nostrils. Consume it until it has consumed you. For there you will find the voices that have called from the shadows, the ones that promise to cherish you only to rip your body to shreds.

In Everything That’s Underneath, Kristi DeMeester explores the dark places most people avoid. A hole in an abandoned lot, an illness twisting your loved one into someone you don’t recognize, lust that pushes you farther and farther until no one can hear yours cry for help. In these 18 stories the characters cannot escape the evil that is haunting them. They must make a choice: accept it and become part of what terrifies them the most or allow it to consume them and live in fear forever.”

Deeply Twisted
“A mother murders her eldest daughter. A clock appears in the middle of a park. A one-eyed man with a raven on his shoulder joins three homeless men on a chilly night…

Embrace the night and all its terrors in this macabre gallery of monsters. The living and the dead, the spectral and the material—horrifying visions from the tormented mind of Chantal Noordeloos. Your nightmares will never be the same.”

Drunk_on_bookz gave us this haunting, snowy cover of Sister by Rosamund Lipton.

“Nothing can break the bond between sisters …When Beatrice gets a frantic call in the middle of Sunday lunch to say that her younger sister, Tess, is missing, she boards the first flight home to London. But as she learns about the circumstances surrounding her sister’s disappearance, she is stunned to discover how little she actually knows of her sister’s life – and unprepared for the terrifying truths she must now face. The police, Beatrice’s fiance and even their mother accept they have lost Tess but Beatrice refuses to give up on her. So she embarks on a dangerous journey to discover the truth, no matter the cost.”

Our own findingmontauk1 here giving some love to Becky Wright’s Daughters of the Oak.  The cover is fire and gives all sorts of fall weather vibes!!

“1646 – The English Civil War. The Royalists of King Charles I, and Cromwell’s Parliamentarians, battle, both eager to lay claim to a tattered country, where life has become cheap and death trivial.

Though, for the lowly commoner, a greater, far more devious, war rages. It threatens the souls of the weak, timid and needy. Seeking refuge in the Lord’s word, God fearing folk employ the skills of one man, the Witchfinder. His success speaks of his talent, to seek out, punish and rid the countryside of Witches, the Devil’s Whores.

2016 – A paranormal team are called to investigate, as poltergeist activity brings terror to one family. Under the cover of darkness, in silent suburbia, an endless night of battle against evil ensues, until finally, a new day dawns.

Lies, secrets, and treachery, it seems, are never forgotten.
Welcome to Manningtree…”
