October 2020: Monthly Recap

The Ladies of Horror Fiction team kicked off our month of “Horror Adjacent” by celebrating Latinx Heritage Month. We spent our Friday nights celebrating horror movies directed by women (as well as the new adaptation of Rebecca). Emily also shared her experience of attending Fantastic Fest 2020 online.

A big thank you to Madeleine D’este, Mary SanGiovanni, and Jennifer Anne Gordon for their guest posts! If you missed these posts, the October new releases, or any of our review round ups in October, you can find them below!

Guest Post: How do you fight a vampire in Australia? by Madeleine D’este
After more than 120 years of Stoker’s Dracula, perhaps it’s time to revisit and reinvent the vampire, by mixing the old ways with the new.

Guest Post: The Art of Business for Women Writers by Mary SanGiovanni
When I was a little girl, I told myself stories. I hand-wrote pages of scenes between characters, and when I learned to type, I wrote my first story – a mystery about a crime-solving cat modelled after Humphrey Bogart. I was a voracious reader of speculative fiction. It wasn’t until high school that it finally clicked with me that the books I read were written by people who did that for a living.

Celebration of Fantastic Fest 2020
Although 2020 has been a complete mess, a few good things have come out of it, and one of those good things is film festivals moving online.

Ladies of Horror Fiction celebrates Horror Adjacent

Horror Adjacent: Latinx Reads
For this post, we’ve collected horror-adjacent reads by Latinx authors to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month (9/15–10/15).

Horror Adjacent: Spooky Nonfiction
Another type of read we like to consider horror adjacent are nonfiction books that incorporate some aspect of the spooky, macabre, occult, weird—whatever floats your creepy red balloon.

Horror Adjacent: Apocalypse Fiction
We know we’re all living through a semi-apocalyptic event right now, but they do say fight fire with fire.

Guest Post: The Authors to Blame if You Find Yourself Having Sex in a Cemetery by Jennifer Anne Gordon
Now, I think it’s safe to say that there are many types of people in the world, today I am going to be writing about one very specific type of person. The “Taphophile”, a word that stems from the Greek, meaning “to love graves”.
