The "Branches" Recap

Ladies of Horror Fiction Instagram Challenge Weekly Recap Banner - it simply states "The LOHF Instagram Challenge Weekly Recap" on a background with a skull atop a stack of books imprinted to the left.

There were lots of entries for Branches! It was apparently much easier than “Gloves” was!  Check out some that we really enjoyed!

Readswithdogs gave us loads and loads of branches with this photo!  Here we get to see the stunning cover of Through the Woods, stories by Emily Carroll.

“Five mysterious, spine-tingling stories follow journeys into (and out of?) the eerie abyss.

These chilling tales spring from the macabre imagination of acclaimed and award-winning comic creator Emily Carroll.

Come take a walk in the woods and see what awaits you there…”

Today’s #ladiesofhorrorfiction is branches! I just received Nothing but Darkness from @mariainmadness this week, and I am looking forward to reading this one (also, the cover was absolutely perfect for today’s challenge 😂). I saw a review on Amazon that said Nothing but Darkness gives American Psycho vibes, so that’s a good thing in my book. Here’s the synopsis in case you haven’t seen it: . . Aidan Sheppard has always resisted his darker urges—only the violent ones, he’d never deny himself anything sexual—until one night when he goes too far. Way too far. It doesn’t matter that it was an accident; it still happened, and he can’t escape it. Now he must choose between what’s expected of him, morality, and what he truly wants, depraved release. But as bloody fantasies flood his mind, Aidan struggles to find control. Desire taking over, he dives deeper into his darker side. His best friend and coworkers remain unaware of the calculating criminal he’s become in the hours between work and drunken escapades. Aidan analyzes each step necessary to fuel the cruel fire inside him, logic and preparation only two of the many weapons at his disposal. His creativity grows as well, until he hits a dangerous snag that threatens to expose him and obliterate everything he’s built. Paranoia and stress chip away at his confidence, but he must stay in control long enough to cover his tracks, or he risks his freedom, as well as his life. *Content Warning: graphic violence, sexual content, and language* . . #nothingbutdarkness #mariaanngreen #tbr #darknessseries #prettycover #bookmail #bookish #bookstagram #bookporn #booklover #bibliophile #igreads #instabook #booksofinsta #booksofig #bookishfeatures #bookfeaturepage

Book.happy chose to highlight this eerie and stunning cover of Nothing But Darkness by Maria Ann Green.

Tamsparks showcased And The Trees Crept In by Dawn Kurtagich.  And what a great book choice and cover for the prompt!  Should we stay away from the woods??

“When Silla and Nori arrive at their aunt’s home, it’s immediately clear that the manor is cursed. The endless creaking of the house at night and the eerie stillness of the woods surrounding them would be enough of a sign, but there are secrets too—questions that Silla can’t ignore: Why does it seem that, ever since they arrived, the trees have been creeping closer? Who is the beautiful boy who’s appeared from the woods? And who is the tall man with no eyes who Nori plays with in the basement at night… a man no one else can see?”

Mother.horror showed us Pretty Little Dead Girls by Mercedes M. Yardley with its stunning cover design and artwork.

“BRYONY ADAMS IS DESTINED TO BE MURDERED, but fortunately Fate has terrible marksmanship. In order to survive, she must run as far and as fast as she can. After arriving in Seattle, Bryony befriends a tortured musician, a market fish-thrower, and a starry-eyed hero who is secretly a serial killer bent on fulfilling Bryony’s dark destiny.

Mercedes M. Yardley’s Pretty Little Dead Girls: A Novel of Murder and Whimsy is a dark, lovely fairy tale with lyrical language and a high body count. It features a cover by Hugo Award Winner GALEN DARA.”
